This is a hardware problem - pure and simple. This is caused by faulty electrical design in the power, backlight, and digitizer systems. There is an electrical short that occurs if the backlight is turned on at all - infrequent at lower brightness levels (none if the backlight is turned off - e.g. VNC), and getting more frequent as additional power is added to the backlight.
When the unit is switched to battery power, less power overall is flowing through the unit in many cases (e.g. power saving mode), as well as screen brightness automatically being reduced. Ergo, the problems lessen on battery power.
The only way to correct this issue is to redesign and replace the backlight and digitizer systems to add more shielding between the two connections.
ASUS does not want to admit to this DESIGN error. This error was not caught during QA testing since Asus's QA testing for "repeat designs" (i.e. ones that are speed or chipset increases in the same chassis) is very cursory. They cannot thus admit to the flaw, since it would force them to admit to a QA issue caused by lack of resources, and to take back for free repair / replacement every single R1E that was manufactured. Additionally, since it is tied to the DESIGN, and not the manufacturing of the R1E units, it is cheaper in terms of product lifecycle costs to just leave this error in place, until the line is replaced by a subsequent line or is discontinued.
A part ça , bienvenue !
