101 Reasons Not To Get A Tablet PC
Thursday, July 17, 2003
Here is a list of reasons we've heard people say why they don't want to buy a Tablet PC. We came up with a list of 101. (Not listed in any particular order.) There are probably more. Maybe you've got a few?

Many of the points are valid concerns. Some are misconceptions. Some can be fixed. Some are just the way it's going to be. And some will be fixed by time.

101. If it were free, I'd get one.

The real question is: Does the Tablet PC or the software it runs make me more productive, make my life better, or make the day a bit more enjoyable? For some people, the answer is yes. For others it's wait and see. Both are right.

101 Reasons Not To Get A Tablet PC
Debunked by Christopher Coulter

1. It’s too expensive.
It would be better free, eh? But with 2nd Generational models, prices are coming down. Always been near (or slightly above) laptop pricing. Now starting out, below.

2. It’s too small.
Comes in many sizes.

3. It’s too big.
Get the smaller ones.

4. It’s too heavy.
Define heavy. And the NEC is light. Many models to choose from, varying in weight.

5. It’s not durable enough.
The rugged models can somewhat survive a nuclear war.

6. I can’t read it outside.
Sorry, with certain models you can. Wish true of ALL.

7. It can’t get wet.
Yeah, and it’s not very good in the microwave either. But some Rugged models *DO* allow it to get wet. So yes it can. However, common sense should play a part here.

8. It’s too slow.
Matter of perception, and depends upon what thou art doing. But some of the latest models are fast to anyone.

9. It runs too hot.
Always an issue. Speed equals heat. An older slower CPU runs cooler than a newer faster CPU. You make the choice.

10. The processor isn’t the latest technology.
With some models, yes it is. Centrino smorgasbord. Yum.

11. I don’t want to pay extra for two or three year old technology.
You aren’t, tho the Pen Computing concept is old, the software and some of the hardware implementations specific to Tablet PCs are quite new. In some areas, the hardware lags behind Laptops, but it's not really Apples and Oranges. Differing form. Softwarewise: Microsoft didn’t spend millions in R&D for 2 to 3 year old tech.

12. I’ve read they’re coming out with cheaper ones.
You'll never get anything if you always wait. But progress is a good thing. Cheaper, better, faster. Take a big gulp.

13. It’s all hype.
Nope. Sorry. Long been successful in Vertical markets. So not hyped in one segment. Matter of perception tho. Using a Pen to many is freedom. And in Asian countries it is a Godsend.

14. The battery doesn’t last long enough.
One model, Scribbler has super-long all-day battery tech. This is a big issue however, but not one limited to Tablets, it’s an issue common to PDAs, laptops and anything basically. Fuel Cells ahoy.

15. It doesn’t support a second battery.
Wakey, wakey...you aren’t paying attention. Wrong, most models do. Hot-swap and other tech also help out here.

16. It doesn’t have instant on.
Yeah. I know. I know. Sigh. But solid state hard drives are still too expensive for this concept in Tablets and other consumer items.

17. It doesn’t have a CD/DVD player built in.
Yes. An issue. But on account of weight and other issues. Always trade-offs. But virtual CD/DVD tech plays a big part in things Tablet PC.

18. It doesn’t have a serial port.
You are arguing for legacy tech as an advantage? But anyways, USB to Serial adaptors aplenty.

19. It doesn’t support the peripheral I need.
I am sure you will be able to find some adaptor.

20. It doesn’t have enough USB (or other) ports.
Find a model that has enough, or add a hub.

21. The hard drive is too small.
Get a bigger one, you can pick and choose. Go for the biggie 72 oz. Mountain Dew.

22. I won’t be able to get parts to fix it if it breaks.
Not true...consult with repair centers or resellers. Just like laptops.

23. The print on the display is too small.
Change the font settings, or if needed (gasp) downgrade the resolution.

24. The resolution is too low.
Matter of perception. But GPUs improving all the time.

25. The display doesn’t have enough colors.
Differing models vary in differing spec's, 32 bit color in some. Trade off’s in many areas. No perfect everything. Find a model that suits thy needs.

26. The display isn’t sharp enough.
So squint (joookke). smilies/smiley.gif But Differing models vary in differing spec’s.

27. The screen feels too slippery.
Differing models vary in differing spec’s. Find a rough screen. Or sandblast your current one.

28. The pen is too slim.
Wide range of other pens to choose from. In the case of the Acer C110 you are given 3 choices.

29. The pen is too thick.
Wide range of other pens to choose from. Get a thin pen.

30. The pen is too square (Toshiba).
Wide range of other pens to choose from. Find one you like. Choices. Choices. Pepsi or Coke?

31. I don’t have enough money.
Likewise. And that Acer C110 looks sooooo tasty.

32. I can only afford one computer.
I can barely afford this one.

33. I can buy more if I get a regular computer.
Suit thyself. Depends on thy needs. You lose the benefits OF the Tablet PC however.

34. We don’t have enough money in our office budget.
Wait until you do. Or purchase one thyself. Or take up a collection. Hold a bake sale. Do one of those ‘Guess-the-Number-of-Jellybeans-in-the-Jar’ raffles.

35. My boss won’t authorize it.
Get a new boss.

36. My wife won’t let me buy one.
Get a new wife.

37. My kids are in college.
Set aside some extra. Wait till they graduate or make them drop out.

38. Tablet PCs are too new.
The concept dates back to the Dynabook...to Alan Kay, Charles Thacker and Buster Lampson...a concept of which, is technically 30 years+ old. New? No.

39. Tablets have been tried before. They will fail.
Abandon all hope? Never try again? Past efforts failed for a host of reasons. But a real-focused effort and serious R&D money and a broad base of support have helped things in this current push.

40. Microsoft will abandon support for the platform.
Yah haven’t been out much, eh? The Tablet PC platform is the OS. Will Microsoft abandon its core OS? Do be serious.

41. I’m a Luddite.
Ahhh, Return to the Valley of the Stone Age. Candles are good enough. Cars are evil.

42. I don’t know how to use a computer.
So learn. It’s high time you did.

43. I don't need a computer.
No you don’t. But they come in handy for some things.

44. I only use computers at work.
So use it at work.

45. I just need a computer to do email. (It does too much of what I don't need).
Tablet PCs do email, very well in fact, and can carry on the go. If it does what you need, why quibble with the extra of which you aren’t using?

46. I’m waiting for the next generation.
Likewise. But at some point that's a dead-end game.

47. I’ll wait till they get better.
They will always get better. Have fun waiting.

48. I'll wait 2 to 3 years to get one.
Suit thyself. 2-3 years of missing out however.
“Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.” (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus)

49. We have to wait till next fiscal year.
Well wait. See yah next year. It will still be here. Tick tock, tick tock...

50. I already have a computer that does all that a Tablet PC does.
Oh really? So you have a Tablet PC then? Then, buy a few more for your family, friends and neighbors...

51. My computer does everything I need it to do.
Suit thyself. Such doesn’t cancel out the extra functionality of the Tablets tho.

52. I just bought a computer.
Clap. Clap. So get another one.

53. I have all the computers I need.
Oh really? If I were to give you this Tablet PC for FREE, would you say that then?

54. The IT department doesn’t provide support for the Tablet PC.
Wait until they do. Or just use thyself. Sometimes it takes IT Depts awhile to find use of and dictate said policy.

55. I’d have to spend all my time explaining what it is.
It’s a computer that you use a Pen with. That took 1.5 seconds. And people grasp it instantly once they SEE it, so just demo it.

56. It’s not upgradeable.
Yes it is for certain things, similar to laptops. And for areas in which it upgrading isn’t officially supported, always some smarty people out there, who seemingly do the impossible.

57. I write too messy.
Blame a teacher.

58. I write too small.
Get a lawyer. Sue someone.

59. It can’t recognize my handwriting.
Yes it can. Not perfect. Only God is perfect. But it can recognize your handwriting, quite well, in fact.

60. The handwriting recognition doesn't work.
Yes it does. And other solutions too, so if in fact, you feel it doesn’t...PenOffice, and etc.

61. I can’t read my own handwriting.
You a Doctor eh? But the Tablet PC is amazing to me. It sees things you can’t. But maybe, improving thy penmanship could pay off in other areas too.

62. I type faster than I handwrite.
So type. Some models are Convertibles and you can add an USB keyboard for Slates. The fact of you typing fast shouldn’t cancel out the handwriting functionality itself.

63. I already have a PDA.
So do I, they rock. Downside of a small screen. Nice, but not a replacement and not a real full OS.

64. I already have a notebook.
I am happy for you. Want me to send a Best Wishes card?

65. It’s a toy.
No it is not. Matter of perception however. But if you feel its a toy, it sure is a really really fun one.

66. It’s just an expensive Etch-a-Sketch.
It’s a full-computer with a Pen, that’s all. But yes you can Etch-a-Sketch on it. But so much more.

67. It’s from Microsoft.
Wow. Good job. I see you are paying attention.

68. It’s not made by Apple.
Nope it is not. Sorry. Take that up with Steve Jobs, yapper at him.

69. It’s Windows.
It sure is.

70. It doesn’t come with Linux.
Doesn’t come with Linux no. But you can add, hereby losing tons of functionality and the handwriting reco, but the option is there, if you fancy some teeth-pulling.

71. We use Unix at work.
Tons of companies do.

72. All my software is for Apple computers.
Buy some software that is not.

73. I’m waiting for Company X to come up with a competing design.
Be prepared to wait. Tho supposedly IBM is coming out with something.

74. The application I use doesn’t support the Tablet PC.
If it runs under XP, it runs under the Tablet (with the exception of some 3D GPU-heavy video games). But make it run under XP.

75. The software I own is for Windows 95. I’d have to replace it.
Compatibility mode. Get an updated version, as this is like, oh 2003.

76. Wi-Fi is a bubble.
Youbetyourlife and seriously overhyped too. But so? Just because the Tablet PC allows for Wi-Fi, doesn’t make that its only function.

77. There isn’t any software for it.
Knock, knock. Anyone hoooome? Sorry, trucckkloads out there. Lots of Tablet PC specific software. And if it runs under XP, it runs under the Tablet PC. Don’t make me repeat that again.

78. There isn’t Tablet PC software that does what I want.
So hire some programmers. Or Code it thyself. Always good to have more. And tell us about it.

79. The new software for it is buggy.
Technically it’s not new, as it be XP.

80. I would look like a geek if I had one.
But Geeks are sexy. Geeks as nerds, is soooo mid-80s. However Tablet PCs are less geeky and more End-User friendly than other things.

81. They’re ugly.
Many models to choose from. Beauty to one, ugly to another, and vice-versa.

82. It’s not cool looking enough.
Many models to choose from. Find a cool-looking one.

83. I don’t know anyone who has one.
You do now. Besides do you always wait for others to tell you how to think?

84. None of my friends have one.
Be the first then. Do you always hafta follow the crowd?
“A soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone.” (Johann von Goeth)

85. I don’t take notes.
So don’t take notes.

86. I type everything.
You type in art? Shapes and pictures? Can you type while walking, while standing up?

87. I can’t draw.
So don’t draw.

88. Paper is more practical.
So use that. Here’s a pen and paper. But my random 100+ Post-Its(tm) I don’t define as practical.

89. I like writing on paper.
Clap. I am happy for you. You’ll like writing on a Tablet PC too.

90. I copy my notes to help me memorize things.
Now imagine storing them in digital form, never losing.

91. The pen is too lightweight.
So buy a heavyweight one. Comeon, you can do it, its easy.

92. The software I use requires the keyboard.
Some have keyboards, and all have keyboards you can attach.

93. I need to print everything out (forms).
Here’s an idea: when you need to print, hook up a printer.

94. I’m afraid it will get stolen.
True of anything, cept my old Dodge Caravan half-dead Minivan, no one will steal that. smilies/smiley.gif But all sorts of security measures one can take.

95. Speech recognition doesn’t work.
Yes it does. Nothings perfect tho, always room for improvement.

96. I can’t understand the text-to-speech voices.
Yeah, they are a bit maple-syrupy monotone gummy mumbling. But that’s not the fault of the Tablet PC itself.

97. The speakers aren’t very good.
Pretty good here. But yeah, not exactly something to double as a ‘Volume-On-11’ stereo system.

98. I can’t overclock it.
Yes you can. CPUs can be overclocked. Be careful tho.

99. I can’t play games with it.
Tons of games you CAN. And with better GPU's will get better. But yes, Tablet PC is not meant as a pure game machine.

100. Wi-Fi is not secure.
Like that is the Tablet PC’s fault. Find a secure Wi-Fi solution.

101. If it were free, I’d get one.
One? I’d take 100+.
